Some days things happen that just fill you up….this week we had one of those days. A package came that contained the most wonderful, beautiful, touching, hand-made treasure…
A Soul Comfort Quilt.
It was made by some of the girls who took our Soul School class last year, where we combined soul work with hand-stitching and self-care, we reminded ourselves that life can be simple, we celebrated the brave act of taking a break, and we took steps to quiet the chatter in our minds and recharge our bodies and souls. And we had loads of fun along the way!
Well…. a very dear Brave Girl by the name of Camille Keller had an amazing idea… she put out a call to other Soul Comfort girls to join her in creating a quilt…blocks of stitching lovingly combined into a warm and comforting work of art. She was joined by these Brave Girls: Shirley Esau, Michelle Reynolds, Karen Mendenhall, Christine Piazza, Emily Retter, Yvette O’Hara, Rebecca Aydelette, Christine Everill, Carey Powell, Patrice Longmire, Juel McDonald, and Tamara Karlin…Melody and I joined in, too. (We are missing a few names…if your name should be on this list, please send it to me asap and I’ll add it here… send to kathy@bravegirlsclub.com).
Each of these warm-hearted and giving women stitched a block and sent it to Camille, and she combined them with sweet fabrics to make a stunning and beautiful quilt. Meet Camille…the mastermind and get-her-done girl who made this happen…
Because I KNOW you’re like me and want to see each stitched block in detail, here are some close-up shots…. I love them each SO much!!!
Camille asked us to come up with a way to use this quilt in the very best way. We thought about lots of options…
But what we decided would be an absolutely lovely way to treasure this quilt would be to give it away…to send it to Manila to the Safe House for rescued victims of human trafficking that we continue to support. If you’ve been with us a while, you know that this issue is very important to us. A couple of years ago, Melody visited this area of the world and took with her Truth Cards made by hundreds of Brave Girls. She handed them out to both rescued sex slaves who were living in safe houses, and also those who were still on the street, waiting for their opportunity to be rescued and be able to work toward supporting themselves and creating a normal, peaceful life for themselves and their children, away from their captors. Many of you joined us in raising money for Dahlia House, one of the safe houses. Melody continues to communicate with the women who live in Dahlia House every week, and they are still working hard to create more space and more opportunities for rescued girls. They live very simply…in fact for many of them, the beautiful and encouraging Truth Cards that Brave Girls sent were tacked to the walls as their only decoration.
SO….don’t you think the perfect place for this beautiful, feminine, uplifting Soul Comfort Quilt is on the wall in the safe house in Manila? Where the girls can look at it every day and know that they are loved and cared about by women on the other side of the world? We couldn’t think of a better place for this, or a place where it would be more treasured and appreciated, where it could do more good and lift more hearts.
Manila it is! We will be carefully packing this quilt and sending it off this week. We hope we are able to get a picture of it hanging on the wall of the Safe House so you can see how love really can be shared around the world. (sounds sappy, I know…but real is real is real).
